Labour Minister Mildred Oliphant said on Tuesday, that there was an urgent need to tackle the wage gap between top executives and workers as this posed the “biggest risk” to the institutional framework of the labour market.
While she acknowledged the need to “fast-track transformation of the workplace” Ms Oliphant did not provide any clues as to what this would entail, other than referring to a statement by President Jacob Zuma in his state of the nation address that social partners should meet to deliberate on the violent nature and duration of strikes.
