Some good news for SA on keeping up ‘social wages’

IN THE past couple of budgets, the finance minister has made mention of work the Treasury has been doing on fiscal sustainability — essentially, whether the government’s social spending path can be sustained over the long term.

Though the Treasury’s modelling exercise started to yield results some time ago, and has been aired within the government, it has not really been shared with the outside world. But in a presentation to a recent Bureau for Economic Research conference, the head of the Treasury’s budget office, Michael Sachs, discussed the key outcomes.
