One of the myriads of social problems confronting South Africa is pervasive poverty. As a result of this problem, the national and provincial governments have tried to address it through social grants. With unemployment at 46.6%, it’s no surprise millions rely on welfare. In 2020, 10.5-million South Africans became the recipients of the Covid social relief of distress grant. This is in addition to the 18.4-million beneficiaries of other social grants, — primarily old-age and child-support grants. The system has a budget allocation of R250-billion if additional Covid-19 grants are added.
