The strike is now into its 16th week, the longest strike ever in South Africa’s history. The situation around the platinum mines is becoming increasingly desperate, both politically and in terms of the worsening humanitarian crisis. Nationally the effort to mobilise support is gaining momentum with NGOs, religious organisations and political movements providing solidarity.
There is hope that there might be an end in sight for the strike as the parties agreed yesterday to mediation by the Labour Court. It is clear, however, that to avoid a further cycle of dmamaging strikes there needs to be meaningful reform across the sector.
