The separation of the oil and gas sector into a different piece of legislation could be part of the changes to the draft law that will govern the country’s mining sector, if Mineral Resources Minister Ngoako Ramatlhodi has his way.
Amendments to the Minerals and Petroleum Resources Development Act were passed by Parliament in February but President Jacob Zuma still has to sign them into law.
On Tuesday, Mr Ramatlhodi briefed the media ahead of delivering his budget vote speech and said Mr Zuma would return the draft law to Parliament only if he believed it did not pass constitutional muster.
