Maputo — In 2013, there were 13,850 violations of Mozambican labour legislation that came to the notice of the General Inspectorate of Labour (IGT), the Deputy General Inspector, Paulino Mutombene, told a Maputo press conference on 25 February.
He regarded poor labour relations as a by-product of increased investment. “The increase in national and foreign investment, motivated by the avalanche of natural resource discoveries, has brought with it a sharpening of relations between employers and workers”, he said.
Of the offences detected last year, 3,889 resulted in fines, while the labour inspectorate gave warnings to the other employers found breaking labour regulations.
