Eskom scrambles to hook up all of Majuba

BY SIKONATHI MANTSHANTSHA –

ESKOM is working to reconnect all five available generating units at its Majuba power station to the grid by on Wednesday as it continues to ramp up output from the stricken coal-fired plant where a coal silo collapsed on Saturday, triggering load shedding.

It has also asked engineers across its fleet of coal power stations to conduct inspections of silos to avoid a repeat of the accident.

“Our focus right now is to ensure alternative methods to deliver coal to the generating units so we can produce as much power as possible,” said Eskom spokesman Andrew Etzinger.

The utility has contracted mobile conveyors to deliver coal to Majuba’s generating units, replacing the conveyor belt that was damaged by Saturday’s collapse of a 10,000-tonne coal silo. These are fed by trucks hauling the fuel from the mine.
