WHAT are the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) aiming to achieve with their chaotic entrance into Parliament, which has been hailed and reviled in equal measure by different sections of society?
A glimpse of the EFF’s endgame was evident in its year-end statement last year, when it closed the year of its launch with poetry and pomp, quoting the Hungarian lyric poet Sándor Petofi and highlighting its achievements.
“EFF’s emergence has above all proven … that the hegemony of the ruling parties can be challenged,” it said.
And this has been its mantra ever since — to prove that the former political home of the bulk of its leaders, the African National Congress (ANC), is not omnipotent and unchallengeable. It is attempting to break the leitmotif that the ANC is the lone voice of the majority of South Africans.
