BLACK African youths have “regressed in terms of skills”, statistician-general Pali Lehohla said at the release of Statistics SA’s 20-year review of skills and youth unemployment this week. More accurately, what the review appears to show is that relatively fewer black South Africans have acquired skills over that period than their white, coloured and Indian counterparts.
Put another way, while there has been a marked increase in the proportion of skilled employees among other race groups, this trend has been “much less” pronounced in the black African population.
