TO GO into election day with official statistics showing that unemployment is worse than it was last time around cannot be a happy turn of events for the African National Congress.
Statistics South Africa’s quarterly labour force survey shows that 122,000 jobs were lost in the first quarter of this year, with the unemployment rate rising to 25.2%, from 24.5% in the previous quarter. Include those who have given up even looking for work and more than a third of the workforce — 35.1% by the broader definition — are jobless.
