JOHANNESBURG – The ‘poorest of the poor’ term which is often used by government when describing the poverty line in South Africa, should no longer only refer to people living in rural areas, says Busiso Moyo from the Studies in Poverty and Inequality Institute (SPII).
During an interview with Radio 702’s Redi Tlhabi’s on Monday morning, Moyo admitted there were different levels of poverty in the country and the mere fact that urban areas were often seen as ‘not-that-poor’ should not mean their poverty state is not appalling.
He said the migration of people from rural areas to urban areas played a big role in increasing poverty levels in these areas.
