Amcu blinks for the first time since Marikana

This is the first time AMCU has moderated its demands in eight months of wage talks and almost seven weeks of strike action. The politically sensitive figure of R12 500 dates back to the events at Marikana in 2012, when police killed 34 mine workers.

Amcu said on Tuesday it was willing to give producers a three-year grace period to reach the figure, to “give breathing room” to producers and end a strike that has hit more than 40% of global platinum production.

Amcu’s move helps to close this gap, but the parties remain far apart.
