A 4.6 magnitude earthquake hit Johannesburg in the early hours of Friday morning, the US Geological Survey said on its website.
No injuries were reported in the quake, which happened at about 1am, the second in South Africa in less than three weeks.
It occurred 12km west of Orange Farm, a township south of Johannesburg.
One person died as a result of the tremor three weeks ago and more than 600 homes in Khuma township, near Orkney — a gold mining town in the Klerksdorp district — were damaged. Orkney was the epicentre of the 5.5 magnitude quake felt across South Africa and neighbouring countries. The seismic activity also damaged three clinics in Klerksdorp and Stilfontein, as well as a school.
